Project Engineer – Irlam, Manchester

The Role

The role of the Project Engineer is to assist with the scheduling, planning, forecasting, resourcing, and overseeing build activities to ensure project accuracy whilst also ensuring that health, safety and quality are not compromised.

Core Responsibilities

  • Preparing, scheduling, coordinating, and monitoring of assigned engineering projects.

  • Formulating project parameters and liaising with the designers and the build team to ensure that work is being delivered within cost and time constraints.

  • Interacting with stakeholders, interpreting their needs and requirements, and representing them in the field.

  • Managing and controlling budgets, schedules, plans, and overall performance reporting on the project's status.

  • Cooperating and communicating with the project manager and other project participants and collaborating with senior engineers to create more efficient project methods.

  • Reviewing design and build tasks and initiating any necessary corrective actions.

  • Developing specifications for any equipment or materials in conjunction with other team members.

  • Creating frameworks to measure the project's metrics and data collection.

  • Ensuring the project's compliance with the applicable codes, practices, policies, performance standards, and specifications.

Key Result Areas

  • Extensive experience of managing large multiple discipline project plans, each with a value of ca. £10m, in a similar industry e.g. construction, telecoms etc.

  • Able to demonstrate good knowledge and practical application of Earned Value Management for tracking project costs, time, resources and the management of risk.

  • Excellent organisational, time management, leadership, and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent computer literacy.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Qualified to Degree level (or equivalent) in Engineering subject.

  • Knowledge of applicable codes, policies, standards, and best practices.

  • Knowledge and experience of the construction/telecoms or similar sector.

Reporting To:

Contracts/Project Manager


  • Experience of commercial, contract law and project management

  • Working knowledge of NEC3 ECC forms and/or other similar forms of Contract Experience in the telecoms, utilities or construction sector.

Person Specification

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering

  • Must have at least four to five years of experience in an engineering role.

  • Excellent communication skills

  • The ability to work within budgets and to deadlines

  • A comprehensive knowledge of relevant legal regulations

  • Good team-leading skills

  • Ability to engage with various stakeholders and to obtain buy-in into the delivery of the overall project objectives.
